Kana Brown, creator

Allow me to introduce myself, I’m Kana Brown *waves*
Six years ago, I became an esthetician. A few years later, I opened The Beauty Room in the Haynie’s Corner Arts District of Evansville, Indiana. I wanted to create a space where you could find holistic skin care and wellness alternatives to the popular chemical-filled beauty products on every shelf. A place where you can receive personal, one-on-one services. Where, for an hour at a time, you can just be without worrying about the pressures of the outside world swirling around you. The Beauty Room is a sacred space where you can recenter, reconnect with and return to who you are.

I believe whether you live in a bustling big city, or a developing one, like me, every woman deserves to feel naturally beautiful. It’s why I focus on wellness and plant-based solutions for your skin care concerns and beauty regimen.

My Skin Care Story

I struggled with non-stop, full-face acne for years. So, I know personally how difficult it can be to feel at your best when your skin is at its worst. After graduating with Honors from the Salon Professional Academy Esthetics program, I relied on the knowledge I learned in school to launch my career in skin care and beauty. But ultimately, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and the like didn't resonate with me. I sought out classes and mentorships with skin care experts who shaped my holistic approach to skin care and beauty.

I’ve found much success locally and nationally, including a feature in Kentucky Bride and serving as a repeat guest on local media as a beauty expert. I’m the preferred makeup artist for House of White bridal boutique and my name appears at the top of the list for many talented photographers.

What is Holistic Skin Care?

Holistic skin care places an emphasis on bringing together all aspects of your human experience. That means what you eat, how you move and what thoughts circulate in your mind all play a part in your overall well being and how they show up on our largest organ, our skin. I’ve found it can be possible to achieve the skin you want without the harsh chemicals and mystery ingredients you don’t want while being mindful of our whole body. I’ve even partnered with Sixth Street Soapery to create a line of products that can nurture even the most tortured skin. I use this line, along with Laurel Whole Plant Organics, to bring my clients solutions made with the finest natural ingredients to breathe life back into their skin.

Why Evansville?

I’m asked this question often. I’m an advocate for “prospering where you're planted. Growing up, there was no place like the Beauty Room for me or many women of color to turn to for help. I would have loved to have had someone to offer me guidance and show me how to care for my skin and be a light for my community. I’m so honored I can now be that calming space for my community and my clients.

I support Evansville by serving as an ambassador for their “E is for Everyone” campaign. Also, in order to give local creatives a platform for displaying their talents, I began a magazine, LOVE IT! EVV. If you’re looking for ways to get involved, I welcome you to reach out to me to chat about ways we can work together. I will always strive to provide knowledge and love on all things beauty!

Anna Iaccarino, Senior Esthetician

I first started my journey as an esthetician in 2013 when I discovered my innate passion for the beauty industry after completing Cosmetology school in 2012. Coming from someone who has dealt with both acne and pre-mature aging, it’s become my goal in life to help others overcome their own insecurities. Growing up I was very uncomfortable in my own skin, as far as the coloring of my hair and fair skin tone. Over the years I have learned to work with what I have been given and enhance what I have, versus manipulating it.

Anna with The Beauty Room Evansville

A year and a half ago I became a mother to a beautiful little girl, and now more than ever these are concepts that I feel strongly about. I hope to instill those philosophies to my family, as well as clients of mine and THEIR children. Society has very strong, normalized ideas on what is considered “beautiful”. While I do think there has been a shift in the right direction as far as that goes, there is still work that needs to be done, celebrating all forms of beauty.

Beauty standards are not the only thing that have become normalized. The way we “achieve” those standards with the products and treatments full of harsh chemicals, has also grown to be pretty common. I first became attracted to holistic skincare when I realized it was the only effective method to treating my acne. After unsuccessful attempts with various products full of “acne-fighting” chemicals and ingredients, I finally opted for an alternative approach. Low and behold, there was something to be said for the organic, holistic way, thus creating a whole new passion for my career and lifestyle.

I have admired Kana and The Beauty Room for years; everything that they stand for. On top of holistic skincare, healing, and general wellbeing, TBR is extremely supportive & collaborative with the community, as well as other local businesses. I am somebody who truly wants to see Evansville, the surrounding areas, and local businesses flourish. I want to play a part in that in any way that I can and could not be prouder to have joined this team.

I am so excited to meet you, work with you, and take care of you!

Do I need to take my makeup off before facial?
Not at all! During the facial we will take care of that! You just need to allot an hour of your time to come and relax. I will have you fill out paper work before we get started.  Then have you remove your jewelry and outerwear and put your cell phone on silent so you can get comfortable. The rest is a treat!

Can I get a facial before my special event?
I'd advise you to do the facial at least 3 days prior to events. You never can be sure how ingredients will react with your body.

Do I need to bring my makeup with me?
As a professional freelance makeup artist, I have all the products needed for your appointment. If there is something in particular you just absolutely love, you are more than welcome to bring it and I will incorporate it during our session.

What happens during the makeup lesson?
You will need your personal makeup for this session. I will have you bring all of the makeup you currently use and we will go through what to keep and what to ditch. I will demonstrate and walk you through steps of how to create the look that you want on one side of your face. You get to show that you understand the information by finishing the other side! You also get a face chart to take notes on!

When do I need to book my Bridal Trial?
A wedding trial can be booked any time before the wedding. Three to six months out is ideal. I HIGHLY suggest getting more bang for your buck and booking it on the day you will be doing something special pertaining to the wedding. Think engagement pictures, bridal showers or even bachelorette party. If that doesn't work out, just pick a day you won't be curled up in sweatpants. You will want to show off your glamorous face, trust me.

How long does my hair need to be for waxing?
The technical length is 1/4 inch. Since most of us don't take a ruler to that, I suggest a week and a half to two weeks depending on your hair growth cycle.

How long does it last?
Removing hair by waxing can give you up to 3 weeks of fuzz free skin. It all depends on your growth cycle. So, yes it does hurt, but It is worth not having to shave every other day!
